More than 100 flights canceled in Germany due to snow and ice

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

Several German airports disrupted their flight schedules today due to snowfall and freezing rain in Germany, with more than 100 flights canceled.

120 takeoffs and landings out of about 1,090 scheduled for today were canceled at Frankfurt, Germany's largest airport in the west of the country.

"The runways need to be cleared, and de-icing the aircraft is also more complex and demanding," airport officials said.

Poor visibility is also disrupting air traffic.

In Munich, 35 flights were canceled as a precaution on Saturday evening, out of a total of 750 departures and landings scheduled at Germany's second-largest airport.

The German weather service warned of freezing rain later today after snowfall overnight and advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel.
