The newly elected US President Donald Trump stated on his Truth Social platform that the US should not interfere in the situation in Syria, at a time when rebel groups began to surround the capital Damascus.
- Syria is in chaos, but it is not our friend, and the US should have nothing to do with it. This is not our fight. Let's let the situation develop. We will not interfere - wrote the future US president a few minutes before meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace in Paris.
Trump is in the French capital, where tonight the ceremonial opening of the renovated Notre Dame Cathedral, part of which burned down in a major fire on April 15, 2019, will take place.
The ceremony will be attended by about 40 heads of state and government.
