Trump Weighs Direct Talks With Maduro as Washington Intensifies Pressure on Venezuela

Former President Donald Trump has reportedly told close advisers that he is considering reaching out directly to Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, even as the United States increases political and economic pressure on Caracas.

According to those familiar with the discussions, Trump has expressed interest in holding a personal conversation with Maduro to “cut through the noise” and push forward negotiations on issues that have stalled under escalating tensions. The idea marks a significant shift in tone, coming at a moment when Washington is tightening sanctions and openly criticizing Venezuela’s leadership.

Advisers are said to be split on the move. Some believe direct dialogue could break the current stalemate and potentially give the U.S. a stronger role in shaping future developments in the country. Others argue that such a conversation could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts and be interpreted as weakening the U.S. position.

The Venezuelan government has not publicly commented on the possibility of a direct conversation, though Maduro has, in the past, expressed openness to speaking with U.S. leaders if it leads to relief for the country’s struggling population.

If the outreach happens, it would mark one of the most unexpected political moves involving Venezuela in recent years. For now, the situation remains fluid, with advisers noting that Trump has not yet made a final decision.
