The United States has urged its citizens to leave Iran immediately, warning that the security situation is rapidly deteriorating amid widespread unrest and a hardening response from Iranian authorities.
In a sharply worded alert, the U.S. State Department said Americans in Iran face growing risks from civil unrest, arbitrary detention, and severe travel disruptions. Officials stressed that the U.S. government has very limited ability to assist its citizens inside the country, as Washington has no diplomatic presence there.
The warning comes as protests continue across multiple Iranian cities, fueled by anger over political repression, economic hardship, and alleged abuses by security forces. Authorities have imposed heavy restrictions in some areas, including roadblocks, internet disruptions, and heightened security patrols, complicating efforts to move safely within the country.
U.S. officials cautioned that dual nationals are particularly vulnerable, noting that Iran does not recognize dual citizenship and may treat U.S.-Iranian citizens solely as Iranian nationals. This can limit access to consular help and make departures more difficult.
Commercial travel options have become increasingly unreliable, with flights subject to sudden cancellation and border crossings facing tighter controls. Americans who are unable to leave immediately were advised to seek secure locations and avoid demonstrations or large gatherings.
The warning underscores growing international concern about Iran’s internal stability and the risk that unrest could spiral further. As tensions rise both domestically and internationally, the State Department said the safest option for U.S. citizens remains to depart the country as soon as possible.
