Israeli strikes kill at least 30 in Gaza Strip, Palestinian authorities say

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip killed at least 30 people today, including six children at a water collection point, bringing the Palestinian death toll to more than 58,000 after 21 months of war, health officials in Gaza, controlled by Hamas, which the US and EU consider a terrorist organisation.

In the central Gaza Strip, officials at Al-Awda hospital said they had received 10 bodies after an Israeli attack on a water collection point in nearby Nuseirat. Six children were among the dead.

Israel and Hamas have made no progress in indirect talks aimed at pausing the war and freeing some Israeli hostages. The main sticking point is the issue of the deployment of Israeli troops during the truce.

Israel says it will end the war only when Hamas surrenders, disarms and goes into exile, which the radical Palestinian organization refuses to do. Hamas says it is ready to release all 50 remaining hostages, about 20 of whom are reportedly alive, in exchange for an end to the war and a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces.
