Sweden Confirms Major Fighter Jet Deal with Ukraine, Deliveries to Begin in 2026

Sweden has announced a landmark defense agreement to supply 150 JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine, in what officials describe as one of the largest military export deals in the nation’s history. The first aircraft are expected to arrive in 2026, marking a major boost to Ukraine’s air power as it continues to modernize its military capabilities.

The decision, approved by the Swedish government and backed by Parliament, underscores Stockholm’s deepening support for Kyiv amid ongoing regional tensions. Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson stated that the deal represents a “strategic partnership for European security” and a firm commitment to ensuring Ukraine’s long-term defense stability.

The Gripen, a lightweight multirole fighter known for its agility and advanced radar systems, is designed for quick deployment and easy maintenance — qualities that Ukrainian officials say make it ideal for their air defense needs. The aircraft can perform a wide range of missions, including air-to-air combat, reconnaissance, and precision ground strikes.

According to defense analysts, the addition of the Swedish-made jets will significantly enhance Ukraine’s ability to defend its airspace and conduct coordinated operations with NATO allies. The move also signals Sweden’s growing role in European defense production, following its recent integration into Western security structures.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the agreement as a “historic step toward securing the skies of a free Ukraine,” expressing gratitude to Sweden for its unwavering support. He noted that the Gripen fleet will form the backbone of Ukraine’s future air force and strengthen the country’s deterrence capabilities for decades to come.

The 150-jet deal will be implemented in several phases, with training programs for Ukrainian pilots and engineers already set to begin in 2025. Swedish defense industry sources indicated that production will ramp up in coordination with international partners to meet delivery targets on time.

This agreement not only deepens military cooperation between Stockholm and Kyiv but also sends a strong message to Europe — that Ukraine’s allies are prepared to equip it for long-term defense readiness rather than temporary wartime assistance.

With this historic contract, Sweden positions itself as a key defense partner in shaping the future of European security — and Ukraine takes a decisive step toward transforming its air force into one of the most capable in the region.
