Passengers Left Waiting for Hours Before Chicago–Fort Lauderdale Flight Was Canceled

CHICAGO — Passengers traveling from Chicago to Fort Lauderdale say what should have been a routine flight turned into hours of frustration, uncertainty and, they claim, a complete lack of basic customer care.

Several passengers contacted German Daily News US to report that their flight was scheduled to depart at approximately 3 p.m. Instead, they say they were repeatedly left waiting at the airport until around 9 p.m., when they were finally informed that the flight had been canceled.

That means passengers spent roughly six hours waiting for answers.

But the frustration did not end with the cancellation.

Passengers told German Daily News US that no lunch or dinner was provided during the long wait. They also complained that communication from the airline was inadequate and that they felt they were being treated as though their concerns simply did not matter.

One passenger described the experience as feeling like “we don’t exist.”

That is a serious accusation.

Flight delays and cancellations happen. Airlines face weather problems, mechanical issues, staffing challenges and other circumstances that can disrupt an entire operation. Passengers understand that not every problem is within an airline’s control.

But how passengers are treated during a disruption is within an airline’s control.

Keeping people waiting for hours without clear information is frustrating enough. When those passengers are then told their flight is canceled after spending much of the afternoon and evening at the airport, the airline’s responsibility to communicate clearly becomes even more important.

And when travelers say they received neither lunch nor dinner during the prolonged wait, questions about customer care become unavoidable.

What happened during those six hours?

Why were passengers kept waiting until approximately 9 p.m.?

When did the airline know the flight might ultimately be canceled?

What information was communicated to passengers?

And what assistance, if any, was offered to people who had already spent hours at the airport?

These are questions that deserve straightforward answers.

For passengers, this was not simply a line on an airport departure board. These were real people with connecting travel plans, hotel reservations, work obligations, family responsibilities and, in many cases, children or elderly relatives traveling with them.

An airline may not always be able to prevent a cancellation.

It should, however, be able to communicate with the people affected by it.

German Daily News US is contacting the airline for its response and an explanation of what caused the delay and eventual cancellation, as well as what assistance was offered to the affected passengers.

We are also asking passengers who were on this flight to contact us and share their experience.

If you were there, what happened between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.?

Your experience matters, and we want to hear it. Reporting for German daily news, Mike Jehovah
