AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

Alexandra Frilich, 58, whose novels were among the bestsellers in Germany, was found dead on Tuesday morning, investigators said. A murder investigation has been launched after the renowned German author was found dead on a boat in Hamburg after being violently attacked, police said, according to the Guardian.

The case was quickly transferred to the homicide department after it was determined that she had been attacked, according to the Guardian. Authorities declined to provide further details, except to say that forensic material had been collected and a medical examiner's report had been submitted.

According to reports by local NDR television, citing police sources, Frilich was shot, the Guardian writes.

Investigators have issued an appeal for potential witnesses who may have noticed suspicious activity around the long pink boat where Frielich lived, on the banks of the Holzhafen, on the Elbe River in the eastern part of the Morfleet district.

Her body was discovered on Tuesday morning by her son, police said, who believe she died between midnight and 5.30am, the Guardian reports.

Media reports said divers were at the scene of the crime, amid speculation that weapons could have been thrown into the Elbe.

Frielich began her career as a journalist, initially in Ukraine, where she founded a women's magazine in Kiev. She later worked as a freelance journalist in Germany for women's and other magazines such as Stern, before turning to writing novels.
