Pistorius: NATO members should close defense gaps

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

It is up to all NATO members to close their defense gaps, regardless of the cost, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said after talks with his counterparts from the Alliance member states in Rome.

“It is the task of all NATO countries in Europe and beyond to close the capability gaps… regardless of whether it costs 2.5, 3 or 3.5 percent,” Pistorius told reporters, referring to spending targets based on national GDP.

Pistorius added that Germany, along with Poland, Italy, France and the United Kingdom, whose ministers attended the talks, are aware of their responsibility.

US President Donald Trump said that European NATO members should increase their defense spending to five percent of GDP from the current two percent.

The US administration believes that the current level of allocation is insufficient for effective defense, especially given current security challenges, such as the conflict in Ukraine.
