German police in Cologne have detained five French nationals and one Belgian woman who attempted to climb the city’s famous medieval Gothic cathedral.
Police reported that they were alerted by church security guards who spotted the climbers on surveillance cameras in the middle of the night.
Riot police surrounded the cathedral while a helicopter flew over the northern tower, until five of the climbers were caught inside the tower’s staircase. Authorities stated that the men were between 18 and 27 years old, and the woman was 26. Their identities have not been disclosed.
Police confiscated a camera, a mobile phone, and lock-picking equipment. During a search of the premises, several broken doors were discovered, as well as backpacks containing climbing gear.
The Cologne Cathedral is a major tourist attraction and one of the oldest and most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in Northern Europe. It is considered Germany’s most iconic church.
