A state funeral will be held for the late former US President Jimmy Carter on January 9 in Washington, D.C., announced last night by current US President Joe Biden.

President Biden also declared January 9 a day of mourning in the US due to the death of the oldest former president and ordered that American flags be flown at half-staff for 30 days starting Sunday.

Former US President Jimmy Carter died last night at the age of 101 at his home in southern Georgia, his foundation announced.

A Democrat, Carter, who has retired from public life, was the 39th US president, serving one term (1977-1981).

He was the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, and since February 2023 has been receiving home palliative care.

His last public appearance was at the funeral of his wife Rosalynn in November 2023.

Carter was sworn in as president at the age of 52 on January 20, 1977, defeating Gerald Ford in the 1976 election. He left office on January 20, 1981, after losing the 1980 election to Ronald Reagan. Biden cut short his family vacation in the U.S. Virgin Islands and in a statement recalled Carter's life and legacy, recalling that he was his role model and friend.

America and the world have lost an extraordinary leader with Carter's death, Biden said.
