Ten inmates considered "armed and dangerous" escaped from a New Orleans jail early Friday morning, believed to have had help from inside, the Orleans County Sheriff's Office said. Three inmates have been captured, while seven are still at large.
It was previously reported that 11 inmates had escaped, but that number was later revised on Friday.
The inmates were discovered missing during a routine morning check at 8:30 a.m. local time at the Orleans County Jail. They are believed to have escaped shortly after midnight.
The sheriff's office said the inmates removed a sliding cell door from its track at about 12:23 a.m. and then left the jail at 1:01 a.m. by breaking through the wall behind the toilet.
The shell and screws were removed with the help of toiletries, she said, but she did not specify what the items were. They then climbed down the wall and ran across the highway.
The fugitives also left vulgar messages for guards. One, misspelled, read: "to easy, LOL."
Authorities have increased the cash reward for information leading to the fugitives' arrest.
