British Skier Dies in Avalanche at Popular French Alpine Resort

A British skier has been killed after being caught in an avalanche at the La Plagne ski resort in the French Alps, authorities confirmed, highlighting the ongoing dangers posed by unstable mountain conditions during the winter season.

The incident occurred on an off-piste section of the resort, where the skier was reportedly descending with others when a sudden avalanche swept through the area. Emergency services were quickly dispatched, but despite rescue efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Local officials said weather conditions in recent days, including heavy snowfall followed by fluctuating temperatures, had increased the risk of avalanches across the region. Avalanche warnings had been issued, urging skiers and snowboarders to exercise caution, particularly outside marked and secured slopes.

La Plagne, one of France’s largest and most popular ski destinations, attracts thousands of international visitors each winter. While the resort maintains extensive safety measures on its official runs, experts continue to warn that off-piste skiing carries significant risks, even for experienced skiers.

The British Foreign Office is understood to be providing assistance to the victim’s family, while French authorities have opened an investigation to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the incident.

The tragedy has renewed calls from mountain safety officials for greater awareness of avalanche risks and stricter adherence to safety guidance, as winter sports enthusiasts continue to flock to alpine resorts across Europe.
