Bundestag votes no confidence in German Chancellor Olaf Scholz

AUTHOR: M.J. GDNUS
The Bundestag has voted no confidence in German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, world media reports.

Scholz received the support of 207 deputies out of 733, while 394 voted against him, and 116 abstained.

This left him far from the required majority of 367 deputies, AP writes, N1 reports.

The debate in the Bundestag on Scholz's dismissal lasted more than three hours.

Scholz's plan was to lose confidence in order to pave the way for new elections on February 23.

According to world media, Scholz will later ask President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to dissolve parliament.

The Free Democrats left the ruling coalition last month, and Scholz's Social Democrats and the Greens now govern without a parliamentary majority.
