Russia Unfazed by Trump’s “Theatrical Ultimatum”

AUTHOR: M.J. GDNUS

Russia is unmoved by U.S. President Donald Trump’s “theatrical ultimatum” about imposing sanctions on buyers of Russian exports if Moscow does not agree to a peace deal in Ukraine, a senior security official said today.

Yesterday, Trump, sitting beside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the Oval Office, announced new arms shipments to Ukraine and threatened 100% secondary tariffs on buyers of Russian goods, with oil making up the majority of that trade.

The American president also expressed frustration with Vladimir Putin, saying he “doesn’t want to call him a killer, but he’s a tough guy.”

“Trump issued a theatrical ultimatum to the Kremlin,” former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev wrote on X, in English. “The world shuddered, awaiting consequences. Warmongering Europe was left disappointed. Russia didn’t care.”

The Kremlin has not directly responded to Trump’s remarks so far, but on Monday it stated that it is clear the United States continues to supply weapons and ammunition to Ukraine.

A White House official in Washington said Trump plans to impose “100% tariffs on Russia” and secondary sanctions on countries that continue to buy Russian oil, if a peace deal is not reached within 50 days.

Eighty-five out of one hundred U.S. senators support a bill that would authorize Trump to impose tariffs of up to 500% on countries that assist Russia, but Republican Senate leadership is still waiting for Trump to give the green light for a vote.

China and India are the largest buyers of Russian crude oil. Trump told the BBC that he is “not done with Putin yet,” and believes that a peace agreement in Ukraine is possible.
