Sweden’s national equality watchdog has issued a stark warning that a rapid rise in harassment, threats, and online hate is driving more women away from political and public roles, raising concerns about the health of the country’s democratic institutions.

According to the agency, female politicians, journalists, activists, and community leaders are increasingly withdrawing from visibility after facing sustained campaigns of intimidation. Many have reported receiving daily threats, with a noticeable escalation in misogynistic language, sexualized abuse, and coordinated harassment on social media.
