UN Human Rights Commissioner: Israel has not proven Gaza hospital claims

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, said the UN had recorded 136 Israeli attacks on 27 health facilities in Gaza, causing “significant deaths and destruction.” While Israel often claims that Palestinian armed groups are using such facilities for military purposes, Turk said Israel had not substantiated these claims with evidence, Al Jazeera reported.

“Israel has not provided sufficient information to substantiate many of these claims, which are often vague and broad. In some cases, they appear to contradict publicly available information,” Turk said in his address to the UN Security Council.

Turk called for an independent investigation to investigate Israeli attacks on hospitals and allegations that Hamas is using these facilities for military purposes.

Israeli means and methods of warfare have killed tens of thousands of people, caused mass displacement and devastated the territory, he added, stressing that "a human rights catastrophe continues to unfold in Gaza before the eyes of the world."
