At the initiative of the Mayor of the Royal Capital of Cetinje, Nikola Đurašković, and the President of the Municipality of Bar, Dušan Raičević, a Montenegrin family from Berlin donated funds for the realization of a documentary series within the Montenegrin America project. This project aims to preserve from oblivion the stories of Montenegrins who, far from their homeland, left a deep mark on the history, culture and social life of the United States of America - the Royal Capital announced.
As stated in a statement from the local government of Cetinje, Montenegrin America is an attempt to restore collective memory and strengthen the identity bond between Montenegro and its emigrants through personal testimonies, archival materials and contemporary narrative. The diaspora has played an important role in preserving Montenegrin identity for decades. During the 2006 referendum for independence, it was precisely the mobilization of the diaspora that contributed to the achievement of this historic goal. Today, Montenegrins abroad continue to contribute to their country — through humanitarian aid, investments, cultural initiatives, and political support. This project not only preserves memories, but also transmits them to young generations growing up far from their homeland. In a time when identities are being erased and reshaped, Montenegrin America reminds us of the importance of roots, belonging, and heritage. An important contribution to the project was also made by former diplomat and prominent researcher of the Montenegrin diaspora, Gordan Stojović, who donated the results of his thirty-year research work on Montenegrin emigration in America. His archive, which includes numerous documents, photographs, and personal testimonies, is an invaluable source for understanding the life and work of Montenegrins on American soil, the Royal Capital announced.
