Police Detain Dozens at Botun Protest, All Released After Questioning

Police detained 54 people during a protest in the town of Botun, authorities confirmed, before releasing all of them after statements were taken.

The detentions followed a public demonstration that drew a large crowd and led to a heightened police presence in the area. Officers intervened as tensions rose, citing the need to maintain public order and ensure safety for both protesters and bystanders.

Those taken into custody were transported to local police stations, where they were questioned about their involvement in the protest. According to officials, none of the detainees were formally charged, and all were released after giving statements.

Police said the operation was carried out in accordance with the law and stressed that the detentions were temporary and preventive in nature. They added that no serious injuries were reported during the incident.

Protest organizers and participants criticized the police response, arguing that the gathering was largely peaceful and that the detentions were unnecessary. Some protesters said the actions created fear and confusion among those who had assembled to express their views.

Local authorities defended the measures, saying they were aimed at preventing potential escalation and ensuring that the protest did not disrupt public safety. They emphasized that citizens retain the right to peaceful assembly, but that demonstrations must take place within legal boundaries.

The incident has sparked renewed debate about policing tactics at public protests and the balance between maintaining order and protecting civil liberties. Human rights groups called for transparency and dialogue to avoid similar situations in the future.

As calm returned to Botun, officials said they would review the events surrounding the protest, while organizers indicated that further actions could follow to press their demands through peaceful means.
