Berlin and Warsaw Urged to Reset Ties Amid Growing Strains

German and Polish officials are facing mounting pressure to achieve a major breakthrough in their increasingly strained relationship, as disagreements over security, historical issues, and EU policy continue to overshadow cooperation between the neighboring countries.

Diplomats on both sides acknowledge that the relationship—long considered a cornerstone of stability in Central Europe—has reached one of its most difficult phases in recent years. Tensions have grown over defense commitments, migration policy, and differing approaches toward Russia, leaving key bilateral projects stalled.

In Berlin, policymakers argue that closer coordination is essential as Europe confronts new geopolitical risks. They point to Poland’s significant role on NATO’s eastern flank and its growing influence within the European Union as reasons for renewed engagement. German officials have privately expressed concern that unresolved disputes could complicate broader European security planning.

Warsaw, meanwhile, has insisted that the path to improved relations lies in addressing long-standing grievances, including historical compensation issues and what it sees as unequal treatment within EU institutions.
