Germany Postpones Foreign Minister’s China Visit Amid Diplomatic Friction

Berlin announced today that its foreign minister’s planned trip to China has been postponed. The journey, which was scheduled to begin this Sunday, will be delayed until a later, unspecified date according to a spokesperson for the German Foreign Office.

The ministry attributed the decision to two main factors: Beijing’s recent imposition of export restrictions on rare-earth materials, and Germany’s frustration over the inability to schedule a full slate of meetings during the visit. The spokesperson said the German side “very much regrets” the postponement, particularly given China’s importance as a global actor—especially in relation to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Neither Berlin nor Beijing has publicly taken responsibility for initiating the cancellation. The German government emphasised that it remains committed to dialogue with China, but indicated that talks must lead to tangible outcomes in areas such as trade, strategic materials and geopolitical alignment.

The postponement comes amid rising tensions between Germany and China over chipped-supply negotiations, export controls and Berlin’s concerns about China’s role in international conflicts. Analysts say the move reflects Germany’s growing willingness to adopt a more assertive position toward Beijing, especially as it weighs economic dependencies against security and diplomatic priorities.

With this trip off the table for now, Germany will shift to other channels of engagement, including telephone and video diplomacy, while keeping the option open to reschedule the visit when conditions allow.
