Đukanović: When we do not have good dynamics on the European path, then nationalisms that destroy good neighborly relations are resurrected

Former President and Prime Minister of Montenegro, as well as Honorary President of the Democratic Party of Socialists, Milo Đukanović, said at the Faculty of Political Sciences in Sarajevo that the situation in the region is worse today than it was about 10 years ago, reports Avaz.ba.

"It seems to me that the European perspective of all countries in the region has been further blurred. Responsibility for this lies on both sides - there is insufficient determination of the EU to continue the unification of Europe, and on the other hand, due to the neglect of the reform work of the region," said Đukanović.

In the meantime, he estimates, geopolitical relations have also deteriorated.

“I would say that there is currently a deficit of attention for our region. There are inherited problems that keep this region significantly behind Europe. There are many challenges, there is a lot of work to do, and a lot will depend on the geopolitical outcome. We have had the privilege of having stable geopolitical relations for a long time since the end of the Cold War, and now we are witnessing the birth of a new geopolitical order,” he said.

As for the relations between Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina, they have had different phases, he said.

“We will also remember the early 90s, we will also remember the undoubted mistakes in Montenegrin policy, but we will also remember that Montenegro very quickly took the right stance and continued to build good neighborly relations and became a factor of stability in the region, among other things due to the successful referendum that was held. That was the second stage, during the time of Euro-enthusiasm,” Đukanović emphasized.

According to him, due to the standstill in the European accession process, good neighborly relations have also deteriorated.

"When we do not have good dynamics on the European path, then nationalisms are resurrected that destroy good neighborly relations. Montenegro is more than ever swept away by the influences of Greater Serbian nationalism, thanks to which I think good neighborly relations have deteriorated, including relations with Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia," concluded Đukanović.
