Last night, the European Union marked the first anniversary of its existence and activity on the Montenegrin political scene, although it consists of political entities that have existed for more than three decades (SD, SDP, LP), strengthened by citizens, independent individuals, intellectuals and prominent civic activists, the European Union announced.
On this occasion, the President of the Social Democrats of Montenegro and one of the leaders of the European alliance, Damir Šehović, said that the first year of any serious political organization is not just a sum of results, but a reflection of the strength of the idea, consistency of principles and determination to act in a time of general institutional and social collapse.
"The European alliance passed that test with dignity, responsibility and with a clear message: Montenegro has an alternative", said Šehović.
According to him, in a time when institutions are collapsing, when civic identity is being erased, and society is being pushed into divisions and primitivism, the constituents of the European Union have come together not for political profit – but for historical responsibility.
“To stand up for the best that this country has produced: freedom, equality, anti-fascism and civic Montenegro,” added Šehović.
Šehović emphasized that the European alliance is not a passing political phenomenon, like most others, but the continuity of the struggle that progressive forces of Montenegro have led for decades.
“It is the hope that this country does not have to be trapped in the past, nationalism and improvisation. Our first year was a year of resistance. A year of gathering. A year in which we showed that politics can have a vision and measure and that it can be in the service of values that transcend any party interest. And we have only just begun,” emphasized the SD leader.
The President of the Social Democratic Party of Montenegro and one of the leaders of the European Alliance, Ivan Vujović, said that the resistance and clear alternative were recognized by those for whom it was most important – the citizens of Montenegro.
“Our first year was a political baptism of fire, a year of facing the reality of a destroyed state and a meaningless political system. However, through every challenge – from Budva to Nikšić – we have shown that the strength of ideas and consistency produce results,” said Vujović.
The leader of the SDP said that the European Alliance offered something in every city that Montenegrin politics had been lacking for years: true local patriots, non-partisan figures, social activists and young leaders with pure intentions and concrete solutions.
"We offered politics without calculations, with a vision, programs and projects that change lives. The citizens recognized this. Thanks to them, Budva is once again civic and European. In Gusinje, we are a pillar of stable government. And in Podgorica, Nikšić and Kotor - our councilor teams are a reliable support for all those who want a modern, developed and just Montenegro", Vujović emphasized.
The President of the Liberal Party and one of the leaders of the European Alliance, Vatroslav Belan, assessed that those who are part of the European Alliance today have the right to be proud of the results and the strength of the idea that brings them together.
"But we have no right to stop. We tied the day of the Alliance's founding to the Day of the Fighter - not because of symbolism, but because of the obligation to defend an anti-fascist, civic and European Montenegro, just as the generations before us built and defended it", Belan is clear.
According to him, this fight is being waged for the sake of the generations to come – so that there will be no burden of misconceptions and ideological divisions, but, as he said, a free, modern and democratic state.
"We know that citizens expect more than just political resistance – they expect a fight that has a goal. That is why we listen carefully, respect criticism and do not give up even when the obstacles seem insurmountable.
Belan believes that Montenegro must become a state of knowledge, justice, freedom and development.
"We will not just try – we want and must succeed. Because Montenegro must not remain a country trapped in divisions and stagnation. It must become a state of knowledge, justice, freedom and development. The European alliance will not stop until this fight is won – on behalf of all of us who know what Montenegro can and must be", concluded Belan.
