Secretary General of the Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro Aleksandar Bogdanović participated in the Council of the Socialist International, which was held in Istanbul, under the chairmanship of Pedro Sánchez, President of the Socialist International and Prime Minister of Spain.
The Council, dedicated to the global challenges faced by modern societies, brought together leaders and representatives of progressive parties from around the world, the DPS announced.
Bogdanović spoke at a panel dedicated to digitalization, with a special focus on the threats that modern digital technologies pose to democratic processes, institutions and freedom of expression.
“In the digital era, democracy does not die in darkness, but in the distortion of the truth. For small countries like Montenegro, where democratic institutions are still young and vulnerable, the weaponization of digital platforms, disinformation and foreign influences threaten not only electoral processes, but also trust in the state and its institutions,” Bogdanović stressed.
He warned of systematic attempts to undermine Montenegro’s civic identity and its European future, with the rise of hate speech, political pressure and attacks on free media.
“Unfortunately, these values are also being undermined today by political actors who are part of the parliamentary majority, and who demonstrate loyalty to interests that are not Montenegrin,” he stressed.
Bogdanović said that the Democratic Party of Socialists resolutely opposes these tendencies, and remains committed to restoring trust, strengthening institutions and defending a European and civic Montenegro.
"Democracy should not be defended only on election day - but every day, in the digital space, on the street and in every institution," concluded Bogdanović.
