Costa: EC demands that the Agreements with the Emirates be in line with European legislation

European Council President Antonio Košta is on his first official visit to Montenegro.

At a press conference after the meeting, President Jakov Milatović assessed that Costa's visit represents a strong message of support for Montenegro on its EU path.

"Such meetings at this level confirm that the perspective of the region and Montenegro is high on the EU agenda. I see this as a signal of continuous political dialogue at the highest level between Montenegro and the EU," Milatović emphasized.

Montenegro, he says, is proud of its status as a leader in integration. The goal is clear, says Milatović, and that is to become the first EU member state by 2028.

"Montenegro can be an example of a success story, a light at the end of the tunnel, proof that the enlargement process is alive," Milatović said.

Montenegro, Costa points out, is one of the best examples of the EU's positive momentum when it comes to enlargement.

Now, he notes, it is crucial to maintain this approach and maintain focus on the goal and not slow down this progress.

Costa says that Montenegro has been committed to regional cooperation and good neighborly relations from the very beginning.

"It is very important to maintain good relations with neighbors, especially those who are already EU members. This is a prerequisite for membership," says Costa.

On the Agreement with the Emirates

"Respect for the EU acquis is a basic condition for accession. The European Commission has already assessed these Agreements and Commissioner Marta Kos sent a letter in which she clearly defined the EC's position. And I can summarize the position as follows: These Agreements must fully respect EU legislation, especially when it comes to public procurement and environmental protection," says Costa.

Zelensky wanted to come on Saturday but the Prime Minister had other commitments

Milatović says that there were talks about the arrival of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Montenegro.

Milatović emphasizes that Zelensky was interested in visiting our country.

"You saw that there were talks between Russia and Ukraine in Turkey, so the date of May 15th was dropped. In further communication, we received a request and a request that his visit be on Saturday.

But we received a response from the Prime Minister's office that he had previously undertaken obligations and that he was not able to sign contracts with Zelensky. Therefore, the visit was postponed to another date," Milatović emphasizes.
