Democratic Montenegro has spent over €200,000 on advertisements on the social network Facebook in the past five years, according to data from Meta. In the last month alone, the Democrats had 72 ads for which they allocated over €4,000. Among the sponsored posts was one in which Defense Minister Dragan Krapović issued an order for all army personnel and machinery to be engaged in firefighting – on the same day a photo was published showing him relaxing on a beach.
According to data from the Meta Ad Library, Democratic Montenegro, or the page “Aleksa Bečić – Demokrate – Demokratska Crna Gora,” allocated more than €211,000 for political advertising on Facebook (Meta) from August 4, 2020, to August 14, 2025.
This amount is the highest among parties and individuals, with a total of 4,460 ads.
In second place is the Civic Movement URA, which, according to the same data, spent €72,279 on political advertising, with a total of 2,268 ads.
Next is the “Europe Now Movement” with €45,025 (568 ads), Milojko Spajić – Europe Now Movement with €30,227 (97 ads), while the Social Democratic Party (SDP) invested €27,588, placing 1,506 ads.
The Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) spent €22,691 for 441 ads, and the page “Milo Đukanović” spent €16,515.
Interestingly, in the past month alone, the Democrats had as many as 72 ads, for which they spent €4,296. In the past 90 days, that amount reached €11,562.
What do the Democrats promote the most?
The most frequently sponsored posts by the Democrats are statements from the party’s leader Aleksa Bečić, MP Boris Bogdanović, and their party’s ministers Danilo Šaranović, Damjan Ćulafić, Dragan Krapović, Tamara Vujović, and less frequently Momo Koprivica.
The latest sponsored posts are statements by Boris Bogdanović directed at lawyer Veselin Radulović, and interestingly, they recently also promoted two posts about the removal of a memorial to Jusuf Čelić in Gusinje.
Krapović promotion while lying on the beach
Among the sponsored posts is also the news that Defense Minister Dragan Krapović gave the order for all Montenegro Army machinery to be made available to civil protection and rescue services, with the headline: “Krapović gave the order: Entire army personnel and machinery at disposal for firefighting.”
Sponsoring this news would not be controversial if it hadn’t been promoted during the period from August 11 to 13, when a photo was published showing the same minister relaxing on the beach.
Public data
Data on political advertising on Facebook and Instagram became public after Meta introduced the Meta Ad Library in response to growing concerns about non-transparent political advertising and its possible influence on elections, especially after the U.S. presidential election in 2016.
Since 2019, Meta has made it mandatory that all ads related to politics, elections, or social issues include a clear disclaimer – indicating who paid for the ad – and that all such ads remain publicly available in their ad library.
The aim of these measures is to increase transparency in political campaigns and to allow citizens insight into how paid advertising is used for political messaging on social networks.
