The European Commission's report on Montenegro, adopted today by the European Parliament, once again calls on the Montenegrin authorities to ensure the institutional and financial independence of the public service broadcaster, as well as full respect for court decisions concerning RTCG.
Point 40 of the report states the following:
"The EC regrets the high level of polarization in the media and their vulnerability to political influences, foreign influences, as well as disinformation campaigns coming from both abroad and within the country, which spread narratives that negatively affect the democratic processes in the country and threaten Montenegro's European perspective".
They call on Montenegro to improve media literacy programs and introduce them as a core subject in education.
The EC calls on the Montenegrin authorities to ensure the editorial, institutional and financial independence of the public service broadcaster RTCG, as well as the legality of the appointment of management and full respect for court decisions concerning RTCG.
The Commission recalls that RTCG must respect the law and the highest standards of accountability and integrity.
It regrets the weakening and undermining of the independence of public media and calls on all media entities to comply with legal obligations on the transparency of public funding.
