The South East European Liberal Network LIBSEEN has sent a letter to the Montenegrin and international public.
Their address is reproduced in full below:
"LIBSEEN network of liberals of Southeast Europe is concerned about the attitude demonstrated by the authorities in Montenegro towards civil rights and freedoms, after last night's demonstrations in Podgorica against the illegal awarding of a state award to a person who declares himself an extreme nationalist.
The fundamental right of citizens is the right to assembly, freedom of opinion and disagreement with political authorities, and the obligation of the state is to enable them to express such rights through public gatherings and protests, and not to violently suppress them. Such a thing in a country that is pleading to become an EU member is unacceptable, and LIBSEEN will inform the ALDE alliance of liberals of Europe and the European parliamentarians in Brussels about this.
The authorities must urgently investigate the attack by police officers with physical force and poisonous gases on protesting citizens. Last night, opposition leaders, political party leaders, members of the state and local parliaments, representatives of the civil sector, artists and professors were attacked in this way at the protests in Podgorica. The State of Montenegro must not remain silent on such a shameful demonstration of force against dissidents and political leaders of the opposition, there is no place for such politics in the democratic society of the European Union states."
