"We will become part of the European Union when we have a clean Montenegro, when we have an orderly society," said the President of the Parliament of Montenegro, Andrija Mandić, today.
He made the statement at the Parliament during a joint press conference with the European Parliament’s rapporteur for Montenegro, Marjan Šarec, as reported by the Vijesti portal.
"This is a very important day for the Parliament. Our most important foreign policy goal cannot be achieved without the support of the European Parliament. We have received strong support from the EP on this path. We will be part of the EU when we have a clean Montenegro, when we have an orderly society. One of our main goals is for Montenegro to be a country of happy, free, and prosperous people. We have strong support from our colleagues — I would even say we have the privilege to make that leap," Mandić emphasized.
Šarec stated that a significant step forward has been made and that this was acknowledged.
"I believe Montenegro has every opportunity to join the EU during the current term of the European institutions. I think internal political tensions should not hinder that process. Montenegro must stay committed to EU accession. The opposition has been very constructive regarding the European process, and this cooperation should continue," Šarec said.
He noted that Montenegro faces many challenges — the fight against crime and corruption, media freedom, and electoral law reforms.
"When elections come around, everyone wants to win, and that slows the process. It quickly becomes a national issue, but time waits for no one. The deadlines set by the Government are approaching fast, and all efforts must be focused on the process," Šarec concluded.
