By laying the wreaths on the "Hunting Villa" monuments and the participants of the Christmas Uprising in Cetinje, the delegation of Matica Montenegrin consisting of Ivan Jovović, president; Ivan Ivanović, general secretary and Luka Lagator, president of the Cetinje branch of Matica Montenegrin, paid tribute to the Montenegrin volunteers who died near Medova on Christmas Day 1915 and to the participants of the Christmas Uprising in 1919.
About five hundred Montenegrin volunteers and patriots left America and Canada at the end of 1915 to help defend their country. The ship "Brindisi", on which they were traveling, was sunk on Christmas Day, at the threshold of the birthplace, in the Albanian bay of San Giovanni di Medova. A total of 385 volunteers died, and the "Hunting Villa" monument is dedicated to their patriotic and heroic act - the announcement states.
Matica Montenegrin emphasizes that the Christmas Uprising, which reached its climax in Cetinje on January 7, 1919, is a unique example of patriotism and loyalty to the homeland, which for more than a century has inspired generations of Montenegrins to love and defend their country.
The heroes of the Christmas Uprising opposed the occupation and annexation of Montenegro after the First World War. They did not agree to disappearing, to spiritual and political enslavement, to the loss of statehood and national identity. The spirit of freedom, statehood and sovereignty led the volunteers who died near the Albanian port on Christmas Day, the same spirit that appeared on Christmas Day 1919, the Christmas Uprising, when Montenegrin insurgents and committees opposed the occupation and annexation of Montenegro - they pointed out in the announcement .
They add that the spark of resistance was ignited by the Christmas Uprising and the Komita movement was ignited by the national uprising in 1941, so that after the dissolution of Yugoslavia, Montenegro regained its full statehood and sovereignty in 2006.
May there be eternal glory and thanks to the Montenegrin heroes who died under Medova and the heroes of the Christmas Uprising! - they say from Matica Montenegrin.
