The European Political Community Summit in Tirana is a good opportunity to promote Montenegro, in front of 50 European leaders, as the most advanced candidate country for membership in the European Union (EU), said Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović.
He told reporters ahead of the Summit that the gathering was being held for the first time in a Western Balkan country
"This is an extremely important platform, especially for countries that are not EU members, so today is an opportunity to work additionally in an open dialogue with the EU member states on what makes Europe stronger," Milatović said.
He stated that the topic of the Summit is "New Europe in a New World" and that this means how to make Europe even stronger.
"Today is also a good opportunity to promote Montenegro as the most advanced candidate country for membership in front of 50 leaders from the European continent," Milatović said.
When asked by a journalist from Croatia whether there was a currency problem on the path to EU accession, Milatović replied that Montenegro has been using the EUR for a long time.
"This is also part of a negotiation chapter that we have with the EU, but it is certainly one of the smallest challenges on our European path," Milatović said.
Asked if there was any new information regarding the agreement between Ukraine and Montenegro, Milatović reiterated that it was "on the government's side."
"You know that President (Volodymyr) Zelensky could have come to Montenegro on Saturday, after today's summit in Tirana. However, the Prime Minister had prior commitments, so all of that was left for another occasion," Milatović said.
