A series of new death threats were sent this morning to the email address of Danica Nikolić, editor-in-chief of M Portal.
From the email address slatkislatka@hotmail.com, which has been used for the past three years to send dozens of threatening and insulting messages to Nikolić—as well as to other journalists and activists in Montenegro who have displeased an individual identifying as Bane LA—three new messages arrived this morning containing repeated death threats, along with threats of deportation from Serbia.
It appears Bane LA was particularly irritated by Nikolić’s statement given last night to Television E in response to a public comment by Minister of Culture and Media Tamara Vujović. Vujović claimed that remarks made by Boris Bogdanović, head of the Democrats' parliamentary group—stating that the Škaljari and Kavač criminal clans are paying €8,000 for articles on M Portal, Portal Analitika, and Television E—do not constitute media targeting.
Apparently upset by the mention of the kidnapping and deportation of director Danilo Marunović from Serbia, Bane went on to threaten Nikolić with the same fate.
Among the emails sent this morning, one stands out in which the sender wrote: “Bravo Bogdanović, you finally believed me and publicly called out these sheep...” (with an offensive slur at the end). Typically, threats from this email address—and others directed at M Portal—have followed shortly after politicians in power publicly target the portal or similar media outlets.
Montenegrin police and prosecutors opened a case on September 10, 2022, when Nikolić first reported the death threats she received. Since then, authorities have identified the country and location from which each email was sent, established regular communication with international colleagues and Interpol, yet—judging by this morning's renewed threats—these efforts have not yielded concrete results.
Nikolić has forwarded every threatening email to the Police Sector for Combating High-Tech Crime and has given statements to the police and prosecution on multiple occasions.
