The mother of the newborn whose body was found in a garbage can in Podgorica was arrested, suspected of infanticide

The mother of the newborn, whose body was found in a garbage can in Podgorica, is suspected of infanticide and she was arrested.

"Officers of the Regional Security Center "Center" - Security Department Podgorica, by implementing intensive measures and actions to clarify the case in which the lifeless body of a newborn was found yesterday in the Blok 9 settlement, have fully clarified the case and found the perpetrator. Namely, police officers have, in a short period of time, undertaken a series of police - prosecutorial, operational, technical and procedural activities that resulted in locating the crime scene and bringing the perpetrator of this criminal offense into contact, where police officers, by removing traces and conducting extensive criminal processing, identified the perpetrator as the person I.Š. (28) from Plužine, residing in Podgorica, the mother of the newborn," the Police Directorate announced.

As stated in the statement, "during the investigation phase, a large number of video surveillance cameras were examined and seized, information was collected from a large number of citizens, numerous interrogations and checks of intelligence and operational information were conducted, based on which police activities directed officers to locate the apartment used by I.Š. as well as the crime scene, during which a search was conducted and items were found that are directly related to the traces committed."

"The suspect underwent a medical examination, based on which the commission of the criminal offense with which she is charged was confirmed," the police indicate.

In cooperation with the Higher State Prosecutor's Office, investigative measures and actions were taken, where in further legal qualification, by order of the state prosecutor at the Basic State Prosecutor's Office in Podgorica, I.Š. was deprived of liberty on suspicion of having committed the criminal offense of murder of a child during childbirth - infanticide, the police statement concludes.
