The Day of the Municipality of Ulcinj is celebrated on the first Saturday in April, and symbolically marks the end of the olive harvest, the departure of sailors to the sea and the beginning of the tourist season.
For the first time, a ceremonial session of the Municipal Assembly was not held in Ulcinj on the occasion of the Day of the Municipality because the councilors announced that they would join the protest against the agreement with the UAE.
Citizens gathered at 12 o'clock on Mala plaža to protest, as they say, the government's stated intention to give an investor from the United Arab Emirates the entire hinterland of Velika plaža for use for 90 years, or 99 as announced by Prime Minister Milojko Spajić.
Citizens booed the address of the manager of the Municipality, who comes from the ranks of BS, and who announced that he would support the agreement with the Emirates.
The citizens were invited to the protest by the Mayor of the Municipality of Genci Nimanbegu and representatives of all political parties whose position is united – Ulcinj is not for sale, it does not need megalomaniac projects and the community must ask questions and decide.
The protest, to which the Mayor of the Municipality of Ulcinj and all political parties in the city invited the citizens, stated that they are not against investments, but are demanding transparency and participation in decision-making.
The President of the Ulcinj Municipal Assembly, Ivana Popović, announced that she was opening the protest because there is no celebration where the will of the citizens is ignored, RTCG reports.
"There is no celebration if we cannot decide together about what is ours," she emphasized in her address to the citizens.
She said that they have a quorum because the people came, and added that it is a quorum that gives meaning to everything they do.
"In the spirit of that democracy, I declare this protest open. This is not a session today, but an expression of dignified resistance, a gathering of citizens who do not want to be silent observers," Popović said.
