Đukanović: Belgrade's Great Serbian policy is an extension of Russian imperial interests in the Balkans

From what is most important for the country, I wouldn't do anything differently in society, former President of Montenegro Milo Đukanović said in an interview for Slovenian television 365.
"When you look at the experience we have had in the last three years, when you look at the stumbling of Montenegro after the change of government in mid-2020, you can draw the conclusion that we went even faster than realistically. That we achieved more than possible," said Đukanović in an interview.
He also referred to complaints about how Montenegro was a captive state during the previous government.
"Let's twist that thesis a bit. Montenegro, which was captured, was accepted into NATO by the will of NATO. Brought to the door of the EU by the will of the EU. That Montenegro. And then there was liberation three years ago. And now these liberations, Montenegro is a cancer of the Western Balkans. Does that seem logical to you? Does that make sense to you? No, it seems stupid. And it's stupid. But let's not think that political stupidity resides only in the Western Balkans. "Political stupidity, unfortunately, is much wider than the Western Balkans," said Đuaknvoić.
What, he says, seemed to be buried after the peace agreement signed in Dayton in 1995, turns out not to be.
"It was defeated, but they remain convinced that they should try to achieve their goals in a new time. And they are trying to do it now. Why do they think this is a good time, precisely because of Russia. Russia is always playing with anti-European policies everywhere in Europe. In West Balakan, logically, nationalisms are being played with," said Đukanvoić.
So today, he adds, for three years in power in Montenegro, it is not a pro-European policy.
"It is not pro-European politics if someone tells you that he is a pro-European politician, but he makes every move that is anti-European. It serves the political interests of Belgrade, i.e. serves the interests of Great Britain in Montenegro. And of course, Belgrade's Great Serbian policy is an extension of Russian imperial interests in this part of Europe and in Europe as a whole," Đuakanović points out.
He described Balkan nationalisms as conquering, fascist and villainous.
"Everything that was the instrument of Milošević in the 90s, today is all gathered in one place. The Serbian Pre-Slavic Church is the most powerful instrument of cross-border action of the Great Sprague ideology. For them, Montenegro seems like the most attractive compensation for all the losses they inflicted on themselves due to the wrong policy of the early 90s. And I always warn, anyone who, for any reason, makes calculations with Balkan nationalisms, is not helping the Balkans and pushing it into a new war," underlined Đuaknović.
He characterized the events in Montenegro during 2020 as a strong blow of Greater Serbian nationalism.
"Belgrade understood the change of government in Montenegro on August 30, 2020, as an open door for a new annexation. The pro-regime media in Belgrade conducted the so-called election battles in Montenegro for certain cities with a national frequency. They already behaved like locals here," said Đukanović.
He believes that three years ago, Montenegro wanted to see something new, but that after three years of experience, he realizes that everything new does not have to be better.
"But it could be much worse. Now the question is being asked how quickly Montenegrin society will manage to deal with its mistake during the last three years and to create the conditions for, through the democratic process, to reach a nationally responsible and competent government that will continue to move this country towards Europe," he concluded. is Đukanović.
