The President of the Social Democrats of Montenegro and one of the leaders of the European Union, Damir Šehović, wrote on the social network “X” that the opposition demands have been accepted and that the Venice Commission is mediating in the constitutional crisis.
“The opposition has made two clear demands – and they have been accepted,” Šehović announced, stating that the parliamentary and institutional crisis, which arose after the termination of the mandate of a judge of the Constitutional Court, is being resolved with the support of the Venice Commission, whose opinion will be fully implemented.
“Until then, the procedure for electing a judge of that court is suspended,” said Šehović, adding that the European agenda is now a priority.
Šehović emphasized that there will be no opening of identity issues that divide society – such as amendments to the Constitution regarding the official language, the Law on Montenegrin Citizenship and other topics that part of the parliamentary majority insists on.
"This is an important step forward, because raising such topics at this political moment would mean permanently diverting Montenegro from the European agenda and causing new political tensions with unpredictable consequences. The agreement is clear - it is now up to the government to prove its real commitment to European integration," Šehović said.
