Šćepanović: Several low-intensity wildfires currently active

AUTHOR: M.J. GDNUS

The Ministry of Internal Affairs organized a press conference regarding the current wildfire situation.

Speaking at the conference were Radomir Šćepanović, Head of the Directorate for Operational Affairs, and Milan Radović, Head of the Department for Training and Operational Activities.

"Currently, wildfires are active in Podgorica, Danilovgrad, and Nikšić. In Podgorica, in the areas of Bioč and Zaseok; in Danilovgrad, Topolovo; in Nikšić, in the area of Petrovići. These are low-intensity fires, which are under control and do not threaten any structures or the population.

Teams are still on the ground, remaining on alert and monitoring the fire sites.

In addition to the firefighting crews, officers from the Directorate for Emergency Management are also present, using thermal imaging to detect underground fires, which have caused problems in the past few days.

The latest footage is from Kučka Korita – a small fire moving toward the border with Albania.

Today, seven aircraft are available for firefighting operations," stated Šćepanović.

He announced that this year, six smaller-capacity fire trucks will be procured for initial fire response in rural areas.

"Also, through a joint project with Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, an additional 13 vehicles will be procured for firefighting services," Šćepanović emphasized.

He said that equipment must be regularly renewed, and that a centralized system in this regard would be desirable, although there is a tendency toward decentralization.

Šćepanović also believes that all firefighters should be paid for their overtime work. Otherwise, he said, they have the right to take legal action to claim their rights.
