US President-elect Donald Trump has once again expressed his desire to buy Greenland.
"Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland," his prime minister said on Monday, a day after Trump repeated comments about the Arctic island that he had during his first presidential term, which then caused a diplomatic scandal.
Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, is home to a major US space facility.
The island is on the shortest route from the US to Europe, which means it is strategically important for America.
In response to Trump's announcement, the Danish government announced a huge increase in the defense budget for Greenland.
Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said the package was "a double-digit billion" in kroner, or at least $1.5 billion.
"For the sake of national security and freedom around the world, the United States of America believes that ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity," Trump wrote on his Truth Social network on Sunday.
The statement drew sharp comments from Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute Egede.
"We are not for sale and will not be for sale."
"We must not lose our long fight for freedom. However, we must continue to be open to cooperation and trade with the entire world, especially our neighbors," he said.
