Gunman Wounds Three at Idaho Sheriff’s Office Before Being Killed in Standoff

Three people were injured after a gunman opened fire at a sheriff’s office in Idaho, triggering a tense standoff that ended when the suspect was fatally shot by law enforcement, officials said.

The incident began when the armed individual arrived at the county sheriff’s headquarters and began firing on the building and staff. Deputies and other personnel on site returned fire and took cover as bullets struck the facility. Three people — including two law enforcement officers and one civilian employee — were struck and taken to nearby hospitals with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Law enforcement quickly established a perimeter around the office as the suspect retreated inside or to a nearby area, leading to a prolonged standoff. Negotiators and tactical units were deployed in an attempt to resolve the situation peacefully, but the confrontation ultimately ended when officers engaged the gunman and neutralized the threat.

Officials have not yet released the identity of the suspect or a motive for the attack, but they confirmed that the individual was killed during the final exchange of gunfire. The sheriff’s department said it is cooperating with state and federal authorities as they investigate the events leading up to the shooting.

Local leaders expressed shock at the violence targeting a law enforcement facility, emphasizing the bravery of the officers who responded. “Our thoughts are with the injured and with the families affected by this tragic event,” one official said, noting that the community has been shaken by the attack.

Residents in the nearby area reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing a heavy law enforcement presence as the incident unfolded. Schools and businesses in the vicinity were temporarily locked down while the situation was being resolved.

Emergency responders worked to secure the scene once the threat was over and to provide care for those wounded. Officials said the two officers and the civilian are expected to recover.

The county sheriff’s office said it will review its procedures and offer counseling services to staff and others impacted by the shooting. Authorities also urged anyone with information related to the incident to come forward as the investigation continues.

As the community begins to process the events of the day, law enforcement leaders reiterated their commitment to public safety and said they will work to ensure such attacks are prevented in the future.
