Manhunt for 10 US prison escapees hits the headlines

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

Five of the 10 inmates who escaped from the Orleans Parish jail in the US city of New Orleans last Friday are still at large, and police and federal agencies are continuing an intensive search for them. The latest arrests came on Tuesday when 19-year-old Corey Boyd was found in a house in the city center, bringing the number of fugitives captured to five.

It all began when 10 inmates escaped on Friday, May 16, through a hole behind the toilet in their cells. The inmates were discovered missing during a routine count at 8:30 a.m. local time, and are believed to have escaped shortly after midnight.

According to Sheriff Susan Hutson, around 12:23 a.m., the inmates ripped open the sliding cell door, and at 1:01 a.m., they broke out of the jail after breaking through the wall behind the toilet. The escapees left abusive messages for the guards, including the words "too easy, LoL".

The inmates then climbed down the wall and ran across the highway, and the sheriff's office released a video of the escape showing the inmates running out of the jail and crossing the highway.

The police immediately warned the citizens that the fugitives were armed and very dangerous.

Arrested for murders, assaults, armed robberies...

Among the fugitives are those accused of the most serious crimes, including multiple murders, attempted murders, armed robberies and violence. The youngest among them is 19, and the oldest is 42.

First inmate Kendall Miles was caught on the day of his escape after live-streaming his jailbreak celebration with friends on Instagram.

"I just got out and I'm back with the boys!" he shouted in the broadcast.

After Miles, the next to be caught on the day of the escape were Robert Moidi and Dkenan Denis.

Modi was arrested thanks to an anonymous tip, while Dennis was found on the way out of New Orleans.

Modi was the only one of them to see the sunrise on (temporary) freedom.

The fourth person arrested was Gary Price, who was found by police on Monday.

Price was caught in an abandoned house in the east of New Orleans, and video cameras from houses on the street recorded the moment of his arrest.

The last person to be arrested was Cory Boyd, who was found by the Louisiana State Police on Tuesday while he was hiding in a private home.

The popularity of the hunt for escaped prisoners on social media in the US is demonstrated by the fact that one American website has opened betting odds on which prisoner will be arrested next by Friday.

According to the latest US media reports, the search for the remaining five prisoners is still ongoing. Police have increased their presence in and around New Orleans, and the FBI is involved in the investigation.

The reward for information leading to the arrest of the fugitives has been increased to a total of $12,000.
