The United States is ready to completely abandon mediation in achieving a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
This was announced this morning by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who arrived in Paris for a meeting of European and Ukrainian leaders.
He said that the US would withdraw from the whole story "unless there are clear signs that an agreement can be reached".
Rubio added that President Donald Trump is "still interested" in reaching an agreement, but that "there are many other priorities around the world".
- He is ready to move on unless there are signs of progress - the head of diplomacy stressed.
The question of the day is "whether it is feasible to end the war in Ukraine or not", added Rubio, who was at yesterday's meeting with Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff.
- We came to start a conversation about more specific outlines of what might be needed to end the war. And see if this is a war that can be ended or not. If that's not possible, if we're so far away that it's not going to happen, then I think the president will come to the conclusion that we're done. This is not our war, we didn't start it. The United States has been helping Ukraine for the last three years and we want it to end. But this is not our war - Rubio reiterated.
He stressed that Trump "has been making continuous efforts at the highest level for 87 days to end the war".
- Now we're getting to the point where we have to decide and determine whether or not that's even possible. That's why we've engaged both sides.
Parallel to Rubio's statements, the State Department reported that the draft peace plan presented by the United States received an "encouraging reception" at the negotiations.
They did not provide details about the draft. They also point out that Rubio also spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, to whom he conveyed the same draft.
