US President Donald Trump said that Russian President Vladimir Putin is destroying Russia by refusing to negotiate an end to the war with Ukraine.
"There should be a deal. I think he is destroying Russia by not making a deal," Trump said after his inauguration.
Speaking to reporters, Trump reiterated that he wants to end the conflict as soon as possible, but stressed that he must first talk to Putin. The new US president also said that his Russian counterpart "cannot be enthusiastic about the war because he is not doing very well."
"I got along very well with him. I hope he wants to make a deal," Trump added.
Speaking about the war in Ukraine, Trump added: "Putin is fighting a grueling war, but most people thought that war would be over in about seven days, and now you are already in the third year, right?"
Urgent meeting in Moscow
Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was ready to hold talks with the United States about the war in Ukraine, but he made an ultimatum - the complete surrender of Ukraine, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said in its analysis.
Putin reportedly called a meeting of the Russian Security Council yesterday, where he and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed Russia's readiness for peace talks with the new administration of US President Donald Trump.
Putin stressed that any peaceful solution should be based on "eliminating the root causes" of the conflict, which, according to him, includes meeting Russia's tough demands.
