US President Donald Trump said on Monday he would discuss the situation in Gaza and Iran when he meets Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House next week, expressing hope that a ceasefire in Gaza could be reached soon.
Trump plans to meet with Netanyahu on Monday. Senior Israeli official Ron Dermer was in Washington this week, holding talks in preparation for the meeting.
Trump and Netanyahu worked together on a military operation against Iranian nuclear facilities in June, which culminated in US B-2 bomber strikes. Trump said the strikes “destroyed” Iran’s nuclear capability, although the extent of the damage to Iran’s nuclear program is still under debate.
Trump expressed hope that a ceasefire and hostage exchange between Israel and the Iranian-backed Hamas militants in Gaza would be reached next week.
“We hope that happens. We look forward to it happening next week,” he told reporters as he left the White House for a day-long visit to Florida. “We want the hostages to be released.”
Hamas has said it is ready to release the remaining hostages under any agreement to end the war in Gaza, while Israel says the war can only end if Hamas is disarmed and destroyed. Hamas refuses to lay down its arms.
The Gaza war broke out after Hamas-led militants attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, according to Israeli figures.
