U.S. President Donald Trump last night called on the Iran-backed militant group Hamas to accept what he described as the “final proposal” for a 60-day ceasefire with Israel in Gaza, to be delivered by mediators from Qatar and Egypt.
In a social media post, Trump stated that his representatives had a “long and productive” meeting with Israeli officials regarding Gaza.
He did not specify who his representatives were, but it had been planned that U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President J.D. Vance would meet with Ron Dermer, senior advisor to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump said that Israel had agreed to the terms for a 60-day ceasefire, “during which we will work with all sides to end the war.” He added that representatives from Qatar and Egypt would deliver “this final proposal” to Hamas.
“I hope, for the sake of the Middle East, that Hamas will accept this deal, because there won’t be a better one — IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE. Thank you for your attention!” he said.
Earlier that day, Trump told reporters he hoped a ceasefire-for-hostages deal between Israel and Hamas in Gaza would be reached next week. He is scheduled to meet with Netanyahu at the White House on Monday.
Hamas has stated it is ready to release the remaining hostages in Gaza under any agreement that would end the war, while Israel insists the war can only end if Hamas is disarmed and dismantled. Hamas refuses to lay down its arms.
The war in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and capturing 251 hostages, according to Israeli data.
