Trump: Zelensky should be more grateful, minerals deal still possible

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

US President Donald Trump answered questions from reporters at the White House today, and part of the conference was also dedicated to relations with Ukraine and the agreement on the exploitation of Ukrainian rare minerals.

When asked if the agreement between Washington and Kiev on minerals had failed, Trump replied:

"I don't think so... it's a great deal for us."

He added that he believes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should show more gratitude.

"I think he should be more grateful," Trump said.

On cutting military aid to Ukraine

When asked if he was considering cutting military aid to Ukraine, he gave a vague answer, again criticizing American involvement in the war:

"It's a deal that would never have happened," he said, apparently referring to the broader framework of American support for Ukraine.

He also touched on Zelensky's recent statements, in which he said that the end of the war is "very, very far away."

"He better be wrong. That's all I'm saying," Trump said, adding:

"I want the war to end quickly."

He praised Europe

In his speech, he surprisingly praised Europe, although he has often criticized European countries for, as he claims, too little investment in defense and support for Ukraine.

"We're going to make deals with everyone... including Europe and European countries - and they've done well... they're good people," Trump said, adding that he had spoken to four prime ministers and five presidents from Europe in recent days.

"I know most of them - they're my friends, leaders of different countries... they want to get it done."

"Europe should have given Ukraine more than we did"

However, just moments before that statement, he repeated his usual criticism:

"Europe should have given more than we did" to help Ukraine.

Trump has long accused European countries of not investing enough in defense and not bearing their fair share of aid to Ukraine. However, data shows that Europe has overall helped Ukraine more than the United States.
