US military says it killed senior Islamic State member in Syria

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

The US military said on Thursday it had killed a senior member of the Islamic State jihadist group in a strike in Syria on Thursday.

"Two Islamic State members were killed, including Abu Yusuf, also known as Mahmoud, in an attack that occurred on Thursday in Deir Ezzor province," the US military's Middle East Command said in a statement.

The command added that the strike was part of the US and partners' commitment to disrupting "terrorist efforts to plan, organize and execute attacks."

The strike was "in territory previously controlled by the Syrian government and the Russians," Centcom said.

Washington has been conducting strikes in Syria for years to prevent a resurgence of the Islamic State.

The group seized control of parts of Syria and Iraq in 2014, declaring its caliphate. The jihadists were defeated in 2019 by an international military coalition led by the US.

The Americans have stepped up attacks on the jihadist group since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government on December 8, targeting areas previously protected by Syrian and Russian air defenses.
