Ammunition from India in Ukraine angered Russia

AUTHOR: M.J.

Artillery shells sold by Indian arms makers have been diverted to Ukraine by European buyers, and New Delhi has not intervened to stop the trade despite Moscow's protests, according to 11 Indian and European government and defense industry officials.

According to sources and customs data analyzed by Reuters, the transfer of ammunition to support Ukraine's defense against Russia has been going on for more than a year.

India's arms export regulations restrict the use of weapons to only a declared buyer, who risks having future sales terminated if an unauthorized transfer occurs.

The Kremlin has raised the issue on at least two occasions, including a July meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Indian counterpart, three Indian officials said.
