Pope Leo XIV, in his first Sunday blessing as pope, called for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, with the release of hostages and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
"Never again war!" the new Pope said from the terrace of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, Free Europe reports.
Recalling the end of World War II 80 years ago, he quoted Pope Francis condemning the numerous conflicts that are ravaging the world today, saying that what is happening now is "World War III in parts."
The first American pope also noted that Sunday is Mother's Day in many countries and wished them, "including those in heaven," a happy Mother's Day.
It was the first time he had appeared on the terrace before the faithful since he addressed the faithful on Thursday evening after being elected pope.
