Putin and Macron Discuss Iran and Ukraine in First Phone Call After Nearly Three Years

AUTHOR: M.J. GDNUS

A French diplomatic source stated that Emmanuel Macron spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky before and after his conversation with Vladimir Putin, in order to inform him about the details. Macron also spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump about this contact.

According to a Kremlin statement, Putin said it is important to respect Iran’s right to the peaceful development of nuclear energy, and that Iran should continue to fulfill its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The French president’s office stated that Macron, who believes that the Iranian nuclear threat requires the involvement of all five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, especially insists on Iran’s full cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Last month, the Iranian parliament passed a law suspending cooperation with this agency after Israel and the United States carried out attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities in an attempt to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Iran firmly denies having such intentions.

Macron “expressed his determination to continue the diplomatic path toward a lasting and serious solution to the nuclear issue, Iran’s missile capabilities, and Iran’s role in the region,” the Élysée Palace said, adding that the two leaders agreed to “coordinate” their efforts.

France and Russia are permanent members of the UN Security Council.
