Survey Reveals Growing Fears in Germany and France Over Potential Conflict With Russia

A new public opinion survey indicates that a majority of people in Germany and France now believe there is a “high risk” of a military confrontation with Russia, reflecting a sharp rise in European anxiety amid escalating geopolitical tensions.

The findings show widespread concern across demographic groups, with respondents citing Russia’s aggressive foreign policy, ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and uncertainty surrounding future U.S. involvement in European security as key reasons for their fears. Many participants said they feel Europe is entering one of its most unpredictable security periods since the end of the Cold War.

In Germany, the sense of vulnerability has grown significantly, particularly following recent warnings from defense officials about the country’s military readiness. French respondents expressed similar concerns, with a notable portion saying the European Union must bolster its defense capabilities independent of outside powers.

Analysts say the survey highlights a broader shift in public sentiment across Europe, where citizens increasingly view conflict with Russia not as a distant hypothetical but as a plausible scenario that governments must prepare for.

Political leaders in both Berlin and Paris have acknowledged the rising concern, emphasizing the importance of strengthening national defense, supporting Ukraine, and reinforcing NATO’s eastern flank. However, divisions remain over how far each country is willing to go in terms of military spending and strategic commitments.

The survey underscores the mood of unease settling over Europe as the geopolitical landscape continues to shift. For many Germans and French citizens, the threat of a broader confrontation is no longer abstract—and the pressure is mounting on policymakers to respond.
